Voice over IP - Tested by Uninett AS

Outline:
The most important for a succesful VoIP environment is a good client, that is easy to use and gives the user a good voice connection. We have gathered a list of a number of clients, and tested some of them in our Linux and Windows environment.

An overview of the software we found and we are going to test some of them more extensivly.

This is a commercial provider of Voice over IP services, and they have developed their own client for the Windows operating system.

GnomeMeeting
This is free software for Linux, and needs PWlib and OpenH323 library to work. Latest stable version is 0.96.1

HotSip
It is a free SIP user agent, but you need to receive a registration key to be able to use it.
Notes:
All installations:
The key has to be written with the same case on the letters as stated. (normally upper case)
Windows installation:
If you get an error that it can not install the Jave 1.3.x version AND already got Java installed (Example download newer version at java.sun.com) then do as follow:
1. Unpack the SIPSUA2013.exe into a folder
2. Go to that folder and run: install.jar
3. The install should be running smoothly. If not, please have a look at their homepage for more info

KPhone
KPhone is a SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) user agent for Linux. It supports Presence and Instant Messaging, and to some extent
also video calls between two hosts.

The original KPhone was written by Billy Biggs, modifications made by Pekka Raisio, Jouni Vuorela and Juha Heinanen at Wirlab.

LinPhone

Free Linux SIP phone with a good interface and easy installation.
We downloaded the RPM files for RH9.0 and installed the three relevant packages, libosip, libosip-devel and the linphone. Run "linphone" and it should be working. We have had some problems with updating, since the speex module included is making some problems with the apt-get.

MSN Messenger:
Microsofts Messenger, Version 4.6 allows also connections to other SIP servers than microsofts one. Nice design, works very well. Can be used with the SIP service of iptel.org. MS Netmeeting

This software is included in most windows installations for PC's, or can be post installed on all versions from Win95 to WinXP.

MS Portrait

This is Windows software, running on PocketPC2000/2002 and Windows PC versions. (Win98x, WinME,Win2k, WinXP) In version 2.0 and above, it also supports the MSN messenger, enabling making calls directly to your buddies.

This is a free version for PocketPC, but the development has been stopped on the version 0.10beta. It is based on the OpenH323 project.

This is a very simple, but yet useful SIP User Agent, made to test and verify the VOCAL installation, but can also be useful in debugging other installations as well.

SJPhone

SIP and H.323 Softphone for Windows, Linux and PocketPC from: http://www.sjlabs.com/. The configuration for SIP is a little bit tweaky. And there must not be another SIP client running on port 5060 or the SJPhone won't work.

tkPhone

This is a commercial Linux phone from theKompany. It uses SIP, supports codecs: PCMU, GSM, G729, Speex. It is also compatible with Net2Phone and iConnectHere which is commercial VoIP service providers.
