Uninytt no. 1 2005

Dear reader,

For this edition the traditional news bulletin Uninytt appears in a new wrapping. The content is completely different from the regular editions, and it is published in English.

The occasion is the 2005 NORDUnet conference, which is hosted by UNINETT in exotic Longyearbyen, Svalbard, in April. Svalbard became the northernmost node of the Internet in January 2004, as the island got connected to mainland Norway and the real Internet through an optic-fibre cable. The gigabitspeed provides new possibilities for the entire community in Svalbard and also creates an excellent location to gather researchers and experts of all kind.

This conference event brought up the idea to present the entire activity of the UNINETT Group: The organization itself, the aims and tasks of the subsidiaries, the appointed focus areas in effect at the time, as well as the external research partnerships of the Group. In addition we have seized the opportunity to present some specifc Nordic topics.

We hope that the conference participants as well as our regular subscribers and readers will find this broad presentation interesting and useful.
