The test network is connecting the most advanced network research environments, allowing them to work together in areas such as:
A restructured version of the former Supernett was used for this purpose until the summer of 1998. We saw a potential need for an alternative test network infrastructure, such as the IPv6 infrastructure with a capacity in the range of 20-30 MBit/sec, from first quarter 2001 the test network has increased the capacity to 155 MBit/sec, while in the future there may be a need to test new protocols at speeds in the order of 1 Gigabit/sec.
The test network is not a static structure, but will adapt to changing needs. At times it may consist of several unconnected physical netowrks, with varying numbers of institutions connected.
Uninett will offer an IPv6 Pilot Service for customer whishing to take part in IPv6 eksperiments where such services can be deployed.
